ABSTRACT
Introduction: Barrett's esophagus is considered a premalignant condition of still unknown cause. The presence of dysplasia in these tissues increases the risk of developing esophageal cancer. The low effectiveness of drug treatment and high rates of morbidity and mortality of esophagectomy given way to the development of endoscopic treatment.
Objective: to show the different therapeutic endoscopic techniques used in Barrett's esophagus.
Material and Methods: a literature review on the topic was conducted through consultation database of biomedical literature (PubMed, Hinari, SeCiMed, SCiELO, Ebsco, Google, LIS Cuba), primarily to access items in the last 5 years.
Development: the various endoscopic treatments argon plasma coagulation, multipolar electrocoagulation, laser therapy, cryotherapy, radiofrequency, photodynamic therapy, endoscopic mucosal resection and endoscopic submucosal disecction with emphasis on their effectiveness and side effects were reviewed.
Conclusions: radiofrequency and endoscopic resection is currently the best performing endoscopic variants in the Barrett's esophagus.
