ABSTRACT
Cryptococcosis in Mexico is mainly caused by
Cryptococcus neoformans and
C. gattii. Few studies on sub-types of causative agents have been developed in Latin American countries. For the presence of serotypes in our country, was made a descriptive study in which 150
Cryptococcus sp isolates were studied, from patients who provided by two hospitals in Mexico City. Clinical and demographic patients data, from which yeast isolates were recovered, were registered. The sub-type of yeast was identified by biochemical and serological tests, finally the data were correlated. All yeasts identified as
C. neoformans were mainly isolated from patients with AIDS and other underlying disease, while
C. gattii cases were associated with apparently immunocompetent patients. Was found the next distribution: 83% serotype A (
Cryptococcus neoformans var.
grubii); serotype B 5% (
C. gattii); serotype D 5% (
C. neoformans var.
neoformans); serotype AD 4% (hybrid
C. neoformans) and serotype C 3% (
C. gattii). The results corroborate the serotype A, as the principal etiologic agent of cryptococcosis identified and unlike other countries, in Mexico the
C. neoformans/C. gattii complex, shows a clear diversity in serotypes.
