ABSTRACT
Introduction. Compensatory behaviours to food
binging have negative effects on health, even
when the individual has no formal diagnosis
of an Eating Disorder (ED), such as anorexia
nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN) or binge
eating disorder.
Objective. The aim of this work was to describe
risky compensatory behaviors and risky situations
associated with eating disorders (ED) among
Mexican females with no prior eating disorders
(ED) diagnoses.
Materials and Methods. A total of 862 students
without prior eating disorders diagnosis (anorexia,
bulimia or binge eating disorders), from seven
preparatory schools in the city of Merida, Mexico
were studied. The Questionnaire on Eating and
Weight Patterns – Revised (QEWP-R) was
applied to diagnose ED (bulimia and binge eating
disorder). Students were also questioned about
amenorrhea to identify those with a probability
of anorexia.
Results. Self-induced vomiting at least once a
week during the last three months was reported by
4.3% of the students. Fasting for 24 hrs or more at
least once a week during the last three months was
reported by 9.6% of the students. The frequency
of excessive exercise as a compensatory behavior
was also significant (15.3%). Weight and body
shape were the most important factors that
determined how they felt about themselves as a
person for 5.8% of the students.
Conclusions. Worrisome compensatory behaviors
frequencies were recorded among students
without prior eating disorder diagnoses.
