Education at work within the study plan of the Majoring in Nutrition in Cuba

ABSTRACT
Education at Work (EW) is the fundamental form of organization of the educational-teaching process for the Majoring in Nutrition career, and offers working methods and techniques for Nutrition Sciences at the hospital-medical as well as the community levels of care. EW has been structured into the main curriculum of the Majoring in Nutrition with 2,714 hours (52.5% of the allocated time fund) through the integrating disciplines of “Nutrition” and “Food Hygiene”, both having the nutritional status of the individual and innocuity of foods as their object of work, respectively. The discipline of “Nutrition” amounts to 2,786 hours (Lectures hours: 376; EW hours: 2,410); where as “Food Hygiene” discipline contemplates 622 hours (Lectures hours: 354; EW hours: 304). EW modalities used in the design of the Majoring in Nutrition are hygienic and epidemiological work, visit to hospital institutions and Family Doctors practice offices, Health Administration activities, as well as visits to households and other community institutions. EW main types include morning briefings, medical grand rounds, ambulatory care, diagnostic discussion, medical-surgical care, nutritional and food surveillance, and community activities. Criteria were established for tutors and students in the teaching environments, along with the system for frequent, partial and final evaluations. EW offers techniques and technologies required to assure the goal of the career, as well as the most advanced methods for the performance of the nutritionist once graduated. The conduction of other types and modalities of EW according with the features of the different regions of the country and the specific health problems encountered, are recommended.REFERENCES
