ABSTRACT
The practice of trophic enteral stimulation (TEE) stipulates the administration of 10–24 mL.Kg.
-1day
-1 of breast milk during 5 – 10 days, notwithstanding contributions made by means of
Parenteral Nutrition. TEE should begin within the first 72 hours of extrauterine life. It is expected that TEE exerts a beneficial impact upon nutritional status of premature and/or critically ill newlyborn infant. Benefits of TEE
were assessed from the clinical charts of 214 severely ill newlyborn babies admitted to the Special Care Service, Guanabacoa Gynecologic-Obstetric Hospital, (Guanabacoa,
Havana City), between 2002-2010. TEE was initiated within the first 72 hours of extrauterine life in 80.0% of the babies. Early initiation of TEE was associated with reduction of the weight lost during the first week of extrauterine life, along with lesser time for recovering the weight recorded at birth, and reaching sufficient contributions of energy in order to support growth. TEE is recommended in the severly ill newlyborn infant in order to prevent catabolic states that otherwise would only bring about malnutrition and metabolic disorders, and worsens the morbid process of this class of patients.
