ABSTRACT
Objective: To determine the behavior of congenital cardiopathies, the associated risk factors and other
anomalies found in patients of Iván Portuondo Hopsital, Artemisa, Cuba, over a period of 20 years.
Method: A descriptive longitudinal retrospective study, carried out from January 1st, 1990 until December 31st, 2009. Echocardiography, thoracic X-rays and arterial blood gases were performed on all cases suspected of
having a cardiopathy. Echogradiographieswere also performed on patients susceptible of suffering a chromosomal
disorder or malformation. The associated risk factors, types of cardiopathies and other related malformations were also determined.
Results: During the period 39,260 births took place and 132 children were diagnosed with cardiopathies, giving
a general incidence rate of 3.3/1,000 live births. The main risk factor identified was related with the presence of
a family history of cardiopathy, which was detected in 12 infants, or 9%. Interventricular communications were
the cardiopathies most frequently present (52.3%). Other congenital malformations were present in 12 cases
for a total of 9.1%, with Down’s syndrome being the most f requent (4.5%).
Conclusions: The incidence of congenital cardiopathies was lower than those reported in other studies, with interventricular communications being the most frequent anomaly. A family history of congenital cardiopathies was the main risk factor identified, while Down’s syndrome was associated with being the key chromosomal defect in the patients.
