Caracterización del reingreso hospitalario en pacientes litiásicos tratados un servicio de Litotricia y Endourología

ABSTRACT

Introduction: World incidence rates of urolithiasis range from 0.5% to 1% a year, with a high percentage of recurrences. Since 1975, The Cuban National Urology Group has identified lithiasis as a Health Condition. Objective: To compare, from the clinical and epidemiologically, the readmission rates in the service of lithotripsy and endourology in the Hermanos Ameijeiras Hospital. Methods: A descriptive and retrospective study was performed. The universe consisted of 1518 patients who were admitted in the hospital, while the sample was the 136 patients who were readmitted for the service in the same period. Results: Among the patients who were readmitted, there was prevalence of systemic diseases like HBP and DM coexisting with the lithiasic disease and the previous surgeries. The severest calculi are those in the lumbar ureter and the complete coraliform stones. The most frequent complication that led to patients' readmission was urinary infection. We managed to reduce the readmission rates from one year to another, as well as the patients' hospital stay. Conclusions: The implementation of a comprehensive plan of measures to improve the quality of the attention provided to patients and their follow up until their discharge is the main cause for the decrease in the number of readmissions from 2008 to 2009.
