ABSTRACT
Histoplasmosis is the most common endemic mycosis causing human infection. Is a dimorphic fungus in the environment and a yeast in tissues at 37ºC, particularly in endemic areas. The organism grows in soil rich in bird droppings. The initial exposure to Histoplasma capsulatum is through the airways, but once inhaled into the alveoli, the organism spreads easily in macrophages through the reticuloendothelial system. The main presentation is pulmonary. Its diagnosis can be made by culture Sabouraud agar, DNA specific for H. capsulatum, histopathology, polysaccharide antigen detection circulation H. capsulatum by an enzyme immunoassay (EIA) in the urine, serum and other body fluids. The treatment of choice is itraconazole and amphotericin B in severe cases.REFERENCES
