ABSTRACT
Objective: to characterize acute poisoned patients assisted by the Center for Health, Development and Toxicological Information of Ciego de Ávila province.
Methods: a descriptive-observational retrospective study was carried out including all patients assisted by the Center due to acute poisonings within the period 2005-2010. The variables considered were: sex, age, causal agent, circumstances of the poisoning, administration route of the toxic and level of assistance to the patient. The universe sample was made up by 903 patients.
Results: most of the poisonings occurred in the years 2005 and 2010. Males prevailed, the highest incidence of damage was found in children between 1-4 years of age. Pesticides were the causal agent of major incidence and accidents the most noticeable circumstance. Polyclinics were the institutions that requested most of the information.
Conclusions: the results obtained in Center for Health, Development and Toxicological Information of Ciego de Ávila province proved to be a warning about the most vulnerable population to the intoxications, their characteristics and circumstances. That is why, preventive measures are recommended for diminishing the morbidity caused by these agents in the territory and for improving the training of the health staff so as to attain a better quality in the medical assistance during the follow up of the poisoned patient.
