ABSTRACT
Immunonutrition has become a subspecialty of nutritional support arising many expectations since the arrival to the market of enteral products lines which incorporated nutrients with a pharmacological action specifically oriented to modulate the activity of the immune system.
Notwithstanding the promises implied in the use of such “immunomodulation diets”, the truth is results documented up to this date from clinical trials have failed in reveal real benefits. There are even contradictory reports stating that
administration of such diets could be harmful for patients assisted with trauma. The present review pretends to review the subject, to assess the results observed after the use of the “immunomodulation diets” in the trauma patient, and to put in perspective these discordant reports, as well as to set forth recommendations for their administration, along
with the design of infusion schemes and actions for monitoring such therapies.
