ABSTRACT
Rationale: Nutritional status of colorectal cancer patient might be predicted from the staging of tumor lesion: those subjects with lesions surpassing the mucosa’s basal lamina, and infiltrating lymph nodes and neighboring/remote organs could exhibit a worse nutritional status.
Material and method: Values of selected indicators of nutritional status were recovered from 201 patients electively operated upon at the Surgical Clinical “Hermanos Ameijeiras” Hospital, (Havana City, Cuba) between 2000-2010 because of a single, transmurally growing, tumor lesion of
the colon. Staging of tumor lesion was established by means of the TNM system. Values of nutritional indicators were distributed according with assigned TNM score.
Results: Malnutrition frequency in the study serie,
measured with the Subjective Global Assessment Survey developed by Detsky y cols. (1987) was 28.3%. Post-surgical mortality was 12.4%. Values of the nutritional status indicators were independent from staging of colorectal disease.
Conclusions: No dependency of patient’s nutritional status from tumor lesion staging was shown. It is likely that others factors might influence upon nutritional status of colorectal patient, among them, the capability of tumor cell to produce hyper-catabolizing molecular signals acting systematically by depleting lean tissues.
