ABSTRACT
Objective: To determine pharynx colonization by potentially pathogenic bacteria and the associated risk factors of the carrier state in workers of a Center of Biopharmaceutical Production.
Method: A observational transverse study of carriers was performed with 112 individuals between the ages of
15-60 years. Before the start of work the established ethical standards were met. A pharyngeal and tonsilar
spot were performed on the workers and a survey was completed with them in which the risk factors associated
with potentially pathogenic bacteria were investigated. The sample was grown and processed according to conventional microbiology methods.
Results: The percentage of carriers was 32.1%. Amongst them the most frequent microorganisms were:
Staphylococcus aureus (10.7%) and
Streptococcus pneumoniae (8.9%), followed by β-hemolitic streptococcus (8.0%) and
Neisseria meningitidis (8.0%). Sex and labor link demonstrated statistically significant differences (p ‹ 0.05) in relation to the carrier state.
Conclusions: In the study population a high percentage of carriers of potentially pathogenic bacterias were found in male participants, amongst them
S. aureus (10.8%) y
S. pneumoniae (8.9%), Estreptococo β-hemolítico y
N. meningitides were most common. The carrier state was principally associated with individuals directly linked to the production of biopharmaceuticals.
