ABSTRACT
Objective: To identify the perception of a group of teenagers about obesity and obese people.
Methods:
Ethnographic Research. We used data collection techniques, such as structured interviews, familiarization and
categorization. The study was conducted at the National College of Professional Technical Education, Campus
Milpa Alta Mexico City. He focused the problem of obesity, from the experiences of 20 participants from the
same school, 10 men and 10 women between 15 and 19 years old, obese, according to the result of Body Mass
Index, and 10 men and 10 women who were obese between 15 and 19 years old.
Results: Adolescentes are
concerned about their appearance, which clearly influence social and cultural factors. Obesity is presented as a
social stigma, to which people try to justify their prejudice against fat claiming that obese people are fully
responsible for their overweight.
Conclusions: The family can be one of the main supporters, both in prevention
and in addressing this health problem. It is not advisable to insist on diets, excessive exercise and criticize and
embarrass obese adolescents. On the contrary, it is suggested that family members show solidarity with adequate
food type, complete and balanced.
