ABSTRACT
Our aim is to know the most commonly used cardiac valves prosthesis and its characteristics. The first mechanical valve prosthesis was the Starr-Edwards ball valve prosthesis; in order to eliminated the incidence of thrombosis and thromboembolisms the disc valve Bjork-Shiley was designed and used. Actually the most used cardiac valves prosthesis are the hemidisc valves like the Saint Jude valve. The main characteristics of the mechanical valves are their long term performance and durability but all required anticoagulation for life. The most used biological cardiac valves prosthesis are porcine valves, bovine pericardial valves and cryopreserved homografts; none need long term anticoagulation but its durability is short. We showed the patterns of mechanical prosthesis like Carbomedics, Omnicarbon, Medtronic Hall,.Emiks and Sorin. Actually homografts are used for the surgical correction of native or prosthetic aortic and mitral valve infective endocarditis. Today we used stentless aortic valves as an alternative to homografts for cardiac valves replacement and in older patients is performed transcatheter aortic valve implantation in failing bioprosthetic aortic valves and rescue transcatheter aortic valve implantation(Medtronic Core System) and simultaneous percutaneous coronary intervention in patients with extreme risk profile.REFERENCES
