ABSTRACT
Background: Helicobacter pylori bacterium has been detected in
extragastric regions such as oral cavity and middle ear. Some authors
have shown evidence that it could also be present in tonsillar tissue, but there is contradictory data about its presence in this site. Bacterial
presence in adenotonsillar tissue could be an extragastric reservoir for
its transmission and/or reinfection.
Patients and method: An observational, cross-sectional and prospective
study was done including 50 patients (7.4 ± 2.9 years) scheduled for
tonsillectomy for recurrent pharyngotonsillitis at the Hospital Miguel
Hidalgo of Aguascalientes, Mexico, in 2012. Rapid urease test (RUT)
was performed from tonsillar tissue in urea buffer. Tonsillar tissue was
seeded in blood agar base and incubated at 37
oC in microaerophilic
conditions. Genomic DNA was used in PCR obtained from tonsillar tissue
for amplification of the segments corresponding to
ureC and
hsp60
specific bacterial genes.
Results: All samples were negative to RUT. Bacterial culture was negative
in all tonsillar tissue samples. PCR amplification of
ureC and
hsp60
was not identified in any of the patient samples.
Conclusion: The presence of
H. pylori was not demonstrated in tonsils
of recurrent pharyngotonsillitis patients using three different methods.
