ABSTRACT
Objective: to analyze the prescriptions of antihypertensive drugs in hospitalized patients.
Methods: observational, descriptive and cross sectional study of drug utilization of indication prescription-type. Two hundred hypertensive aged patients were randomly selected from the total number of hospitalized individuals with this disease from January to December, 2009 in «Calixto Garcia» hospital. The primary response variable
was the adequacy or not of the prescription.
Results: the most significant result was that 57 % of the sample was classified as stage II blood hypertension and 65 % were in the cardiovascular risk group C. In the study, 73.1 % of diabetic hypertensive patients were treated with diuretics and 14.9 % with beta blockers. Most of the renal insufficiency patients used angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors and diuretics (60.7 and 78.6 % respectively). Forty four percent of hypertensive patients were under monotherapy.
Conclusions: according to the risk stratification criteria and the associated comorbidity, it was found that management of pharmacological prescription in the studied group was inadequate.
