ABSTRACT
Background and objective. Acute heart failure is a major cause of morbidity and mortality. It has been shown that hyperglycemia on admission to hospital is an independent predictor of mortality in patients with acute coronary syndrome, however in acute heart failure that has not been proven completely. The goal was to determine whether hyperglycemia at hospital admission is a predictor of morbidity and mortality in nondiabetic patients with acute heart failure. Material and methods. Were included nondiabetic patients hospitalized with acute heart failure diagnosis. They were divided into 2 groups, those with normoglycemia and those with hyperglycemia at the time of hospital admission and compared with each other; the end points were hospital mortality and complications. Results. Of a total of 833 patients, 365 (43.8%) were normoglycemic group and 468 patients (56.2%) with hyperglycemia. Five hundred eleven patients (61.3%) patients were male; mean ejection fraction was 43.9% for group of hyperglycemia. Of the total 283 patients (33.9%) were diagnosed as acute heart failure de novo and in 550 (66.1%) were diagnosed as acute chronic heart failure. Mortality was 25.9% in the group of patients with hyperglycemia, and hospital complications occurred more frequently in the group of patients for hyperglycemia (p ‹ 0.05). Conclusions. Hyperglycemia at admission to hospital is associated with increased all-cause mortality and increased hospital complications in patients with acute heart failure.REFERENCES
