ABSTRACT
Reading and writing skills are now essential tools for facing new challenges. Reading is an act of communication, in which there is a process that involves the previous experience of the reader that transforms and rebuilds the text in order to incorporate it to his reality; this is considered one of the highest functions of the human brain and is known to foster the intellectual development of the child. It takes several years to learn to how to read appropriately. Most children have no problems in the development of efficient reading, but about 25% of young students, have problems in learning how to read, of which just 5 to 6% are diagnosed with a reading disorder (Sofie & Riccio, 2002). The objective of this work is to show the theories of reading development, examining the different routes that are used to read (lexical and phonological route) and try to identify a possible site for dysfunction that may affect the process of learning to read.
