ABSTRACT
Objective: We attempted to demonstrate that short treatment with amoxicillin is more effective than short
treatment with ampicillin in pregnant women with asymptomatic bacteriuria.
Materials and Methods: From
June 2004 to January 2005, a quasi-experimental study was carried out by reviewing 205 urine routine
laboratory tests with colony count reports (bacteriuria and/or leucocyturia). Thirty pregnant women were
included by convenience sample with diagnosis of asymptomatic bacteriuria (AB) with confirmed urine
culture and prenatal control, who were randomly divided into two groups (one managed with amoxicillin and
the other with ampicillin), both with short 3-day oral treatment, and a urine culture 10 days after
pharmacolgic management. We determined mean, standard deviation (SD), and χ
2 with correction of Pirie and Hamden (p ≤ 0.01).
Results: Mean age was 23.26 ± 0.59 years and 28.66 ± 0.59 years in the groups administered with amoxicillin and ampicillin, respectively; secondary-level schooling and married revailed
in both groups. Global remission of AB was of 83.3% (39.9% of the group with ampicillin and 43.3% in the amoxicillin group); global recurrence of AB was 16.7% (10% with ampicillin and 6.68% with amoxicillin), without statistical significant difference as determined with the χ
2 test and without modification for gestation trimester.
Conclusions: These results are useful to confirm that prescription of amoxicillin or ampicillin is adequate independent of gestation trimester using the 3-day short treatment, both drugs possessing the same effectiveness for AB remission in pregnant women.
