ABSTRACT
Objective: Our aim to modify knowledge on the Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) in a group
of active carriers from the Moron Commune, Grand´ Anse Department, Republic of Haiti.
Design: An
educational intervention study.
Materials and Methods: Of 47 patients, 15 were chosen in a randomized
sample to modify their knowledge level regarding AIDS. An educational intervention study was applied. Results: After the educational intervention, 100% of patients obtained knowledge concerning their illness
from the Cuban health team staff; ; 93.3% of patients were able to detect disease symptomatology and 80%,
the disease’s transmitting routes, while 60% of these patients presented improvement in their psychologic
illness
Conclusions: All patients came to acquire knowledge with respect to AIDS from members of the
Cuban health team staff. The majority of these patients identified the transmission routes, and more than one
half improved psychoemotionally. The family physician plays an important role in the prevention of AIDS,
principally in terms of the most vulnerable risk groups.
