ABSTRACT
The neonatal period is characterized as a delicate process of adaptation from intrauterine to extreuterine life; the newborn must be able to defend itself against microorganisms from the outside, but sometimes by different unfavorable characteristics of the newborn as low birth weight, prematurity or in presence any immunodeficiency, it is unable to show adequate immune response to any antigen. In this article, we describe the characteristics of the neonatal immune system, defense and inflammation mechanisms involved in this, as well as diagnostic criteria for sepsis and septic shock analyzing different management with immunological therapies.
