Study of social determinants and population health status

ABSTRACT

Background: the study of social determinants of health is an essential tool to modify the population health status.
Objective: to describe various determinants of health and their relations with health indicators in the Area I of the municipality of Cienfuegos in 2001.
Methods: a descriptive study on the impact of various social determinants on the health status of the population in the Area I of the municipality of Cienfuegos in 2011 was conducted. Demographic, social, environmental and lifestyle indicators were considered, as well as indicators of the organization of health services.
Results: the Area I was affected in several studied dimensions such as: the environment and the organization of health services, showing instability in the performance of office and home visits, in addition to the increase in cases treated in the emergency services. A high percentage of exposure to cardiovascular risk factors with an impact on mortality was observed as one of the leading causes of death; the increase in the incidence of communicable diseases like tuberculosis, diarrehal diseases and sexual transmitted infections was also noted.
Conclusions: there are evidences that allow taking actions to modify the health status of the population in the Area I of the municipality of Cienfuegos through the analysis of its determinants, emphasizing in the organization of health services.
