Epidemiology of metabolic syndrome in pediatrics

ABSTRACT
The prevalence of metabolic syndrome in pediatrics depends principally on the diagnostic criteria utilized, population studied and the nutritional status. The International Diabetes Federation from 2007 defines the following criteria in pediatrics, in less than 10 years old metabolic syndrome cannot be diagnosed, in children from 10 and less than 16 years of age they consider the following: alteration in glucose, waist circumference, elevation in blood pressure, hypertriglyceridemia , low cholesterol-HDL and older than 16 they suggest the same criteria be use as adults. The prevalence in Mexico in general varies from 1.6% in adolescents from Tuxtla Gutierrez, Chiapas in 2005 to 20% in Campeche, Campeche and Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas in 2010 and 2011 respectively.. Metabolic syndrome will generally increase as a consequence of childhood obesity.
