ABSTRACT
Introduction: In the last decade, with the introduction of new vaccines against the most common causative organisms of acute bacterial meningitis (Haemophilus influenzae b, Neisseria meningitidis and Streptococcus pneumoniae C) and the development of more potent antibiotics with good hematoencephalic penetration, the incidence of the infection has decreased and the prognosis has improved, but the after effects and mortality have not changed significantly. Objective: The main objective of this study was to identify the etiology of meningitis in children under 16 years and over one month old in the Hospital para el Niño del Instituto Materno Infantil del Estado de México. Material and methods: A retrospective review of the records of patients diagnosed with bacterial meningitis in a period of two years was conducted. Cultures obtained according to the techniques used in the laboratory of the hospital were taken into account. Clinical characteristics and cerebrospinal fluid and the treatment used in each of the children involved were studied. Results: A total of 71 children with acute bacterial meningitis were identified. The age group most affected where children under one year with 60.6% of the total sample. The cases were reported more frequently during the winter months. A causative organism in a corresponding was identified in 8.5% of the cases, corresponding to Staphylococcus epidermidis in 66.6% of the cases. Conclusions: Children under one year are most affected. The peak of cases for the month of November. The agent was Staphylococcus epidermidis mostly found. The fever and convulsions association occurs most frequently in acute bacterial meningitis.REFERENCES
