ABSTRACT
Background: Cancer is one of the main leading death causes in
the country, but in terms of morbidity there is no valid register. The
aim of this study is to describe the frequency, type, distribution
and trend of morbidity and death that have to do with cancer in a
concentration hospital.
Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed in care cases
first from December 26
th, 2005 to December 25
th, 2012 at the
Oncology Hospital of “Centro Médico Nacional Siglo XXI” from
Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social, in which hospital deaths and
patients outflows were included.
Results: A total of 74,402 morbidity cases were identified, in which
cancer prevalence by sex was 59.9% in women and 40.1% in men
and having an overall median age of 59 years old.
Radiotherapy
was the service with more cancer cases with 22.9%. The most
common cancers were: breast cancer 17.4%; colon and rectum
cancer 6.2%; cervical cancer 5.2%; and skin cancer 5.1%. The
leading type of cancer in women was breast cancer with 28.9%,
whereas in men was the prostate cancer with 12.3%. We obtained
an overall mortality of 4.91, in which 1825 registered deaths are
mainly haematological disorders. Breast, prostate and thyroid
cancers have shown a rising trend within the last 8 years.
Conclusion: Breast, prostate and colon and rectum cancers are
the most common ailments demanding care in concentration
hospitals.
