ABSTRACT
Background
Respiratory papillomatosis is generally believed to be caused by
certain subtypes of the human papillomavirus (HPV), which causes
significant morbidity in the respiratory system, block the airway; it’s
recurrent and tends to become malignant.
Objective
To identify serotypes of VPH in Hospital Juarez de Mexico.
Material and method
An observational study that included all patients who underwent
resection of upper respiratory tumors identified as papilloma between
September 2009 to June 2011.
Samples were shipped for analized by PCR.
Results
Fifteen samples were obtained by surgical resection, 11 samples
of laryngeal lesions and 4 of nasal lesions. Of the 11 patients with
laryngeal tumor study, we confirmed the diagnosis of laryngeal papillomatosis
in 10, 90.9%, 5 patients positive for HPV 6, 50% and 5
HPV 11 positive patients; 4 patients with nasal inverted papilloma,
all patients were men. We found in all of them VPH 6 and only one
co-infection VPH 11.
Conclusion
Serotypes found in this study, HPV 6 and 11, are consistent with the
literature. It could be useful to detect those patients whose viral serology
is more prone to malignancy, and disease courses depending
on the serotype, and knowing the epidemiology of our population
could help us in the near future protocols about adjuvant therapies
and vaccination.
