ABSTRACT
Objective
To elucidate if patients underwent a transnasal endoscopic orbital
decompression perceive improvement in the quality of life after endoscopic
surgery.
Material and method
An observational study was made with a case series of 20 patients
with a diagnosis of Graves’ ophthalmopathy who underwent a
transnasal endoscopic orbital decompression. All of them respond
a disease specific quality of life questionnaire for patients with
Graves’ ophthalmopathy (the GO-QOL ) about how they felt before
and after surgery. The results were compared with the McNemar
test (p› 0.05).
Results
Before surgery, all patients reported negative changes in appearance.
After surgery 45% thought that the ocular changes were still evident,
in 50% decreased and 5% reported total improvement. 50% of patients
became interested in aesthetics, mostly women and professionals.
Those with bilateral surgery showed a greater rate of improvement in
visual function and aesthetics. Statistical significance was found for
the ability to drive, home activities, reading and watching television,
and the frequency with which they took pictures and the need to hide
the eye changes because of the disease.
Conclusions
Patients operated on endoscopic transnasal orbital decompression
improve their quality of life especially if surgery is bilateral. The
questionnaire for assessing quality of life in patients with Graves’
ophthalmopathy is a useful tool in assessing the impact of this procedure
in the daily life of these patients.
