Maternal cholesterol as risk marker of low birth weight

ABSTRACT
An observational descriptive study was carried out with the aim to characterize the maternal cholesterol value of the first pregnancy trimester, as risk marker of low birth weight in pregnant woman belonging to the north area policlinic in Ciego Avila, from January to December, 2010. The study universe was constituted by 21 pregnant women that contributed newborn babies whose weight was less than 2500 g. The information was gathered from the individual medical record of the mother and from the obstetric card of the pregnant woman. The main results are: the biggest low birth weight number of children were mothers' children between 20 and 34 years with normal levels of cholesterol; they prevailed in undernourished women with low cholesterol levels, it also was presented with frequency in women with profit of adequate weight with normal cholesterol and in the group of women who were joining the maternal home. In this study it concludes the presence of a low birth weight increase in pregnant woman with the abnormal values of cholesterol as well as a strengthen relation with the nutritional evaluation to the pregnancy attraction.REFERENCES
