ABSTRACT
Introduction: Difficulty of learning is a heterogeneous group of disorders manifested by significant difficulties in the acquisition and use of speech, reading, writing, reasoning or mathematical abilities. These disorders can occur throughout life and may be the result of critical events at very early ages.
Objective: To describe the difficulty of learning during 10 years of follow-up in relation to prenatal and perinatal history of high-risk newborns.
Methods: This is and longitudinal study of prenatal and perinatal history and the difficulty of learning in a sample of 400 high-risk infants attended at a second level of IMSS Hospital. Utilized Gesell, Denckla, Bender, Portellano.
Results: Among children with learning disabilities, 38.5% were males, compared to 35.2% females. The number of patients with learning disability were: 23 (5.8%) first year, 52 (13%) 2 years, 129 (32.3%) 4 years, 148 (37%) 6 years, 121 (30.3%) 8 years, and 119 (29.8%) at 10 years of life. The prenatal history significantly associated with learning difficulties were: antepartum maternal infection urinary tract, cervical, chronic fetal distress and cephalopelvic disproportion. And among perinatal antecendents: cardiopulmonary arrest, surgically treated hydrocephalus, hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy and congenital.
Conclusions: Male gender, the sixth year of life, prenatal and perinatal history commonly associated with hypoxia and suffocation were the factors significantly associated with learning difficulties.
