EEG studies of patients with anxiety disorder

ABSTRACT
Introduction: Neuropsychiatric diagnosis is primarily clinical. However, the need for tools to facilitate the diagnostic task made
imperative the searching for instruments based on clinical observation that correlate with neurobiological markers, but the
interpretation is never obvious.
Objectve: To determine whether anxiety disorder involves a differential effect on EEG recordings conducted in patients with
neuropsychiatric comorbidity.
Methods: We compared interhemispheric findings in patients with anxiety, the asymmetry index between patients with anxiety
and depression, and EEG averages of patients with anxiety, depression and both.
Results: We replicated previously conducted studies on interhemispheric asymmetry in patients with anxiety and asymmetry
index between patients with anxiety and depression. No statistically significant differences were found between the three groups.
Conclusions:These results suggest a trend that points to a differential brain function in patients with neuropsychiatric comorbidity.
However, it was not possible to replicate previous findings about a clear distinction of specific neuropsychiatric disorders based
on EEG recordings.
