ABSTRACT
Introduction: Parkinson disease (PD) is a degenerative disorder of the central nervous system characterized by the presence of resting tremor, rigidity, bradykinesia, and loss of postural reflexes. However, with progression of disease involvement is evident in other areas such as cognitive and autonomic.
Objetive: To describe the cognitive impairment in a cohort of patients with PD.
Methods: A descriptive study was performed in 75 patients with PD (56% male, age: 65
± 9.5 years, duration of disease: 6.5 ± 3.5 years, UPDRS-III: 26 points) evaluated at the Neurology Clinic of the University Hospital Maracaibo-Venezuela, from December 2008 to December 2010. The scales UPDRS-III and MMSE were used.
Results: A total of 25 patients (33.3%) showed cognitive impairment, with a mean age of 68 ± 4.2 years, disease duration of 8.6 ± 4.1 years, and mean MMSE of 21.4 ± 4.5 points. The affected domains assessed by MMSE were associated statistically with disease severity as measured by the UPDRS-III.
Conclusion: One third of patients with PD may present significant cognitive impairment. Age and duration of the disease appear to determine cognitive impairment. The most affected cognitive domains were memory, concentration and calculation, with a progressive decrease with age.
