From Hippocrates to nutritional genomics: Gene-fatty acids interaction

ABSTRACT
Nutrition as a science has made important progress in recent years since it has contributed to understand the molecular and cellular mechanisms involved in the human body response to external stimuli, such as dietetic nutrients. One interesting example is the relation between fatty acids and genes that participate in metabolic and inflammatory responses. Although nutrigenomics and nutrigenetics are undoubtedly disciplines that play an important role in clinical practice for the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases, both sciences are still young and will require further exploration. The aim of this review is to consider the transition that nutrition as undergone in the past years and to explore role of fatty acids in nutritional genomics.
