Objective: To analyze the current situation in nutrition research in Mexico. Material and methods: In the document «Investigadores Vigentes 2013» (Active Researchers) downloaded from the National System of Researchers web site (URL http:// www.conacyt.gob.mx), ten key words were used to identify the institutions where nutrition researchers could be laboring. Electronic media was used to investigate their research area in the World Wide Web. Results: From a total of 17,883 researchers, 1,968 researchers were identified with the key words. From these, only 132 (6.7%) carry out research in the field of nutrition; 48.4% in health sciences, 30.3% in biotechnology and agricultural sciences and 11.3% in biology and chemistry. In regards to the nutrition research areas, most of the researchers (40.9%) are productive in the science and food technology division and in clinical nutrition (24.2%). Mostly of them work at Universities (31.8%), institutions from the Secretariat of Health (30.3%) and the CIAD-CONACYT in the state of Sonora (29.5%). These institutions are located in the Federal District and 12 Mexican states. Regarding the levels in the National System of Researchers, 76.5% of the nutrition researchers are candidates and Level 1, 12.8% are Level II and only 10.6% are Level III. Conclusion: Nutrition research in Mexico is poor. Further research in different areas of nutrition is required to develop strategies and policies for prevention and treatment.REFERENCES
