ABSTRACT
Background: Malnutrition and sedentary lifestyle are environmental health components that influence the onset and progression of the chronic diseases. The analysis of such factors in patients with liver disease is important to establish prevention and therapeutic strategies.
Objective: To characterize the pattern of food intake and physical activity in patients with liver disease.
Methods: In a descriptive, cross-sectional study, 424 patients from western Mexico were studied: 12.7% had normal weight (BMI ‹ 25 kg/m
2), 32.5% were overweight (BMI › 25 kg/m
2), 32.5% were hepatitis C-infected patients and 22.22% were excessive alcohol intake (› 40 and › 20 g ethanol in men and women, respectively). Anthropometric, biochemical and dietary measures were obtained.
Results: The normal weight group significantly consumed more fat and less fiber. The overweight and obese group omitted more meals, lacked a regular feeding schedule and was the most sedentary. The hepatitis C group had better eating habits, but was sedentary. The alcohol group consumed significantly more calories, cholesterol and sodium.
Conclusion: In all study groups, a liver pathogenic diet due to high lipid content and nutrient deficiencies with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-fibrotic function was detected. The differences in the dietary patterns and physical activity between each liver disease group suggest that specific nutritional treatment strategies should be established in the Mexican population.
