ABSTRACT
Despite spectacular advances in life-support technology, the management of patients with severe sepsis continues to be a significant cost because morbidity and mortality are high. Severe sepsis associated with multiple organ dysfunction (MOD) is the leading cause of death in the intensive care units. Severe sepsis is characterized by the activation of multiple cascades leading to systemic inflammation. Approximately 60 years ago was used high doses of steroids with the hope to solve this problem, however their use declined when such drugs not have demonstrated any benefit and an increase of complications associated to it was observed. Recently the steroids have been used again to lower dose for the treatment of adrenal dysfunction and septic shock.
