Albumin in the detection of faecal occult blood

ABSTRACT
Background: The detection of faecal occult blood is a very useful test for the study of patients in which intestinal bleeding is suspected constituting a practical way for the screening of colorectal cancer and other pathologies in healthy population. Taking in account that hemoglobin and albumin are the main proteins in blood we decided to evaluate the usefulness of both proteins for the detection of faecal occult blood which means intestinal bleeding.
Material and methods: A population of 71 patients from 3 hospitals of Havana City was studied using as reference preparation the immunocromatographyc test Hexagon Obti, Human, Germany.
Results: The results founded for each of two systems were as follows: Human hemoglobin system (hHb), sensitivity 94.74%, specificity 98.08%, positive and negative predictives values 94.74% and 98.08% respectively; Human albumin system (hAlb), sensitivity 78.95%, specificity 100% and positive and negative predictives values 100% and 92.86% respectively. The correspondence of both methods with the reference reagent was 97.18% and 94.36% for the systems of hHb and hAlb respectively.
Conclusions: According with the results there is no doubt that the hHb system showed a higher sensitivity and it is the system of choice. Nevertheless the hAlb system could be a good option.
