Prevalence of platelet donors with high titers of anti-a and anti-b

ABSTRACT
Background: Hemolytic transfusion reactions can occur from ABO-incompatible platelet transfusions so reducing this risk has been an area of increasing interest in recent years.
Methods: We conducted a prospective study to determine the prevalence of donors with high titles of ABO antibodies in the Blood Bank of the University Hospital «Dr. José Eleuterio González» in Monterrey, Nuevo León. In which, 313 donors were included,
Results: 128 (40%) were labeled as high titles of ABO antibodies. 86 (48%) of group O were labeled high titles, whose specificity in 23 (27%) was anti-a, 34 (39%) anti-b and 29 (34%) anti-A and anti-b. 33 (33%) of group A donors are labeled as high titles of anti-b and 9 (26%) of group B are labeled as high titles of anti-a.
Conclusion: We found a high prevalence of donors with high titles of ABO antibodies, so we need to screening donors for high title ABO antibodies. It is recommended to study in other areas of the country.
