ABSTRACT
Introduction. The patients older than 60 years of age, are susceptible to present fractures of the distal radius following low energy trauma. There are multiples options for treatment, in which we can find the external fixator. Material and methods. In this article we present the outcome of 25 patients treated with the Pennig, Orthofix, external fixator. We perform an average follow up of this patients of 24 months, range from 4 to 86 months. Results. We found excellent results in five patients, good results in seventeen, fair in two, and poor in one patient, according to the Frykman and Lindstrom scale. Conclusions. The external fixation is a useful tool for the treatment of fractures of the distal radius in the elderly patients. It also has a low index of complications, and the functional results are excellent and good in 88% of the patients.
