ABSTRACT
Rösch in 1969 described for the first time the creation of a transhepatic fistula between de portal vein and the suprahepatic veins. It was in the 80s that the clinical application begun. Transjugular Intrahepatic Portosystemic Shunt, TIPS is since 15 year ago a secure and effective treatment of portal hypertension and its major complications like bleeding and ascites. Encephalopathy and prosthesis occlusion are the principle obstacles for success. TIPS is part of the minimum invasive treatment of variceal bleeding and refractary ascites. New prothesis are giving better results.REFERENCES
