ABSTRACT
The aim of this research was to understand and analyze the
perceptions of heterosexual people from Progreso, Yucatan,
about people with a different sexual orientation. It was a
phenomenological study that used semi-structured interviews
as a technique based in addressing issues grouped into three
categories: personal perceptions; stereotypes, myths and
fallacies, and influences. Twelve individual interviews were
conducted with heterosexual men and women of three age
groups (15-20, 35-40 and 60 and older). Results revealed that
younger participants have greater acceptance towards these
people, showing respect and positive attitudes, although there
were certain prejudices. The stereotypes were the common
answer of the adult participants, highlighting the working nature,
hygienic, friendly and retailer of gay men, aggressiveness and
introversion of lesbian women and promiscuity was
predominant in the perception of bisexuals. The older
participants considered homosexuality as a biological
phenomenon and considered the word "homosexual" to refer to
men more than women, and about bisexuality, the main
manifestation was this ignorance about sexual orientation. It
was found that the experiences and social relations are the
factors that influence the perceptions of the participants in the
three age groups, as well as biased perceptions of some of the
middle-aged which are subject to change upon contact and
interaction with people of different sexual orientation.
