ABSTRACT
Objective: Compare in prospective, longitudinal and clinical essay, the multiple application of functional electrical stimulation effects (FES) vs conventional application in preventing of shoulder pain and shoulder subluxation on patients with hemiplegia, evaluating shoulder function during 9 months. Material and methods: Sixty hemiplegics patients in two groups, divided in relation to rehabilitation attention in: early group (n: 40) and late group (n: 20); the early group was divided in two groups: A (n: 22) and B (n: 18). Measurements: a) AP shoulders radiography evaluating subluxation; b) Pain evaluation on visual scale; c) Brümstrong stages; d) Shoulder function; e) Barthel index. Intervention: FES conventional application in groups A and C (300 electrical stimulation/day); group B treated with 300 electrical stimulations/hour, 10 hours/day, by 3 months. Results: Group B showed the best results in all parameters studied with statistical significance (p 0.05); group B showed better results than group C (p = 0.05). Conclusions: Multiple application of FES in hemiplegic shoulder is more effective than conventional application in preventing shoulder complications and produces better function on plegic upper extremity.
