Trends in clinical applications of melatonin in sleep disorders

ABSTRACT
Melatonin is an indolamine hormone produced by the
pineal gland and its secretion follows a circadian rhythm
determined by the absence of light. Chronobiotic and
sleep promotion effects of melatonin are exerted through
its binding to MT1 and MT2 receptors in the
suprachiasmatic nucleus. These properties underlie its
clinical applications in the treatment of insomnia, delayed
sleep phase syndrome, jet lag, and maybe shift work
disorder. Likewise, melatonin has been used for the
management of REM sleep behavior disorder. There are
several agonist drugs of melatonin receptors such as
ramelteon, agomelatine and tasimelteon which have
shown to produce similar effects to those found with
melatonin.
