Osteoporotic vertebral compromise. A trauma perspective

ABSTRACT

The commitment of the vertebral body osteoporotic is a circumstance that occurs in a high percentage of the adult population, being the most frequent cause of thoracic and lumbar pain associated with falling from a standing position or sitting or efforts. Osteoporosis is defined as a skeletal disease characterized by decreased bone strength predisposing to increased fracture risk. This reason makes clear it as a serious public health problem given that increases costs and cause serious disability and morbidity mainly in the population over 60 years old. In terms of diagnosis and treatment, modifications in recent decades have changed the natural history of disease. Bone densitometry and laboratory should be used for general diagnosis and x-rays are useful for diagnosing fractures. In some circumstances it is required to make the differential diagnosis with other diseases that increase bone fragility as spinal tumors; this requires images from MRI, scan and anatomopathological studies. Its global approach must be multidisciplinary, based on the increase in the prevention of the disease and its complications, for these purpose specific pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapeutic measures are used. The role of the orthopedist is: the diagnosis of fracture of osteoporosis with their differential diagnoses, the initial pain management and preventing deformity; the residual pain management and the planning of therapeutic practices on osteoporotic bone.
