ABSTRACT
The genetic variability of the Volcano Rabbit (
Romerolagus diazi) was estimated and compared among individuals of a wild population and a captive one in Chapultepec Zoo by means of the RAPD method (Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA). A total of 31 DNA
loci were amplified, observing that both populations showed genetic differences in 8
loci (P ‹ 0.05). The wild population presented a higher amount of genetic variability when compared to the captive population. Of the 31 amplified
loci, 12 have become fixed in both populations, and 10 are not statistically significant between populations; it was also observed that in the captive population six
loci were lost, two have lost 88% of their variability and one locus presented a higher amount of variability than the wild population.
