ABSTRACT
Introduction: the occlusion of the central retinal vein is defined as a retinal vascular disorder with potential complications that can lead to blindness. Objective: to analyze the relationship between glaucoma and retinal vein occlusion.
Methods: a transversal descriptive study was performed in patients treated at the retina consultation of "Calixto García" University Hospital in the period from January 1st to December 31st 2007. The variables were analyzed: sex, age, presence of ocular risk factors (glaucoma, hyperopia, myopia, trauma), other associated pathologies (hypertension, diabetes mellitus, bronchial asthma) and the degree of papillary excavation.
Results: there was a predominance of patients belonging to the age group of 60-69 years, being the male sex the most numerous. There was a prevalence of patients with association of retinal vein occlusion and primary open-angle glaucoma.
Conclusions: glaucoma is the risk factor most predisposes ocular occlusion. Arterial hypertension is the systemic risk factor that is most associated with venous occlusion. Optic disc measurements are a predictive factor of retinal vein occlusion.
