Application of the self control for the treatment of the overweight in university students

ABSTRACT
Overweight is a multifactor ailment. Specialists recommend taking preventative measures starting from Health Education at schools, through programs that may allow for the integration of health as an individual and social principle in order to accomplish the proper quality of life. In that matter, it is the Pedagogues who can carry out such proposals. Nevertheless, it is important for them to know one of the working approaches, which, eventually, will help them coordinate programs that can incorporate the assigned disciplines aiming to improve habits that might prevent, or in some cases, lower the problem of overweight in our population. For all this, the focus of this study was to assess the impact of the method of self-control for overweight in a population sample of students majoring in Pedagogy at the University of Veracruz, using a quasi experimental study with a pretest and a post-test that has the following three features: a questionnaire, a behavioral cognitive record in which we incorporated all the data related to the quality and quantity of the food eaten, emotional, environmental and social factors. Another instrument was “Rosemberg´s Self-esteem Inventory”, which has ten questions to be answered using Iicker´s Scale of four options that were applied before the multidisciplinary program (psychology, nourishment and physical activity); and after it. The outcome shows that the technique is successful since the participants were able to indentify the factors associated to their ailment, and so, making the necessary modifications, they could improve their physical health, their self-esteem, their ways to channel their emotions, and in some cases, we could see a reduction in their weight.
