ABSTRACT
Background: maternal-infant area requires a determinants approach in order to enhance the strategic reach of its programs. Objective: to stratify low birth weight in the municipality of Cienfuegos and to characterize it according to the social determinants selected.
Methods: an epidemiological, descriptive and correlational study on stratification of low birth weight in the districts of Cienfuegos was conducted from 2003 and 2007. The strata were defined taking into consideration the value of the average low birth weight rate in this period. The test of independence or homogeneity, used in the case of two samples with dichotomous or more results, was conducted so as to perform the analysis of the qualitative variables in independent samples. Statistics were processed in SPSS version 15,0. The percentage was used as mathematical measures for qualitative variables, and for quantitative variables was used the arithmetic mean. The statistical technique to relate the variables was the Chi-square test.
Results: the study showed statistically significant differences among the groups of low, medium and high risk regarding the level of education, marital status, occupation, nutritional assessment, smoking, history of low birth weight and inter-pregnancy interval. The only associated disease that presented differences among them was gestational hypertension.
Conclusions: low birth weight remains a serious health problem in Cienfuegos, an issue that must be addressed from its determinants for further interventions and better outcomes.
