ABSTRACT
Background: the high prevalence of cancer in middle
and low-income countries increases daily care needs in
the hospice.
Objective: to determine the behavior of some
biological variables in patients in final cancer stage.
Methods: a descriptive study on 28 patients with final
stage neoplasia diagnosis, admitted to the Seychelles
Hospice from February 2010 to February 2011 was
conducted. The behavior of cancer in relation to the
following variables was analyzed: age, sex, primary
location, response to Charlson index, Karnofsky and
ECOG scales, presence of chronic noncommunicable
diseases and health scenario responsible for the
remission.
Results: 54,9 % of patients admitted to the hospice
had an oncological disease, 53,57 % of them were
males. The age group with the highest number of cases
was that from 50 to 59 years, with an average age of
68,6 years (± 15,71). Head and neck malignancies in
men and colorectal in women were the most common
diagnoses. In general, average stay was 40,5 days (±
60,23). Hypertension and diabetes mellitus were the
most frequent noncommunicable diseases. 75 % of the
cases were submitted from hospitals.
Conclusions: final cancer stage shows a behavior that
can anticipate an adequate strategy in the transition to
palliative care provided by the hospice.
