ABSTRACT
Recently, treatment-responsive syndromes that affect hippocampal and cortical function have been shown to be associated with auto-antibodies against synaptic antigens, particularly glutamate or GABA-B receptors. Synaptic autoimmunity may result in a wide variety of symptoms including psychosis, movement disorders, short-term memory deficits, and refractory seizures. In some cases, these disorders occur as a paraneoplastic manifestation of an associated cancer. These symptoms often improve dramatically after immunotherapy or tumor resection. Additionally, for some syndromes the presence of a tumor does not necessarily indicate a poor prognosis. In all these conditions deficits may be reversible despite the duration or severity of symptoms.
