ABSTRACT
Histological and ultrastructural characteristics of two dogs with granulomatous meningoencephalomyelitis (GME) in Mexico are described. Case 1 corresponds to a 4-year-old female miniature poodle, and case 2 corresponds to a 10-year-old female akita. Case 1, in accordance with the clinical signs, distribution of lesions and histological characteristics, was found to be consistent with focal GME; case 2 was consistent with disseminated GME. Ultrastructure showed that the predominant inflammatory cells were mononuclear, forming a characteristic granulomatous inflammation, and also verified the absence of infectious agents thus backing the hypothesis that GME could be an autoimmune disease caused by delayed hypersensitivity, as reported by other authors.
